James Michael Sanders of the Mount Mitchell State Park was the guest speaker at today’s meeting. James is a year round ranger of the park.
Mount Mitchell State Park was the first state park in North Carolina and celebrates its 91st birthday today. Mt Mitchell stands at 6684′ elevation making it the highest peak east of the Mississippi River.
The mountain is home to several endangered animals and birds including the Carolina Northern Flying Squirrel. James related a story of the beauty of these squirrels.
Some facts about the extreme weather on the mountain: the average snowfall is around 100 inches but was actually 107 inches this winter, the lowest temperature ever recorded was -34, the highest wind speed ever recorded was 176 mph. Needless to say, James had several good stories about living on the mountain year-round.
He further noted that the new tower is complete and is handicap accessible.
Mt. Mitchell is worth a visit if you’ve never been!
