This week’s Rotary of Marion guest speaker was Lamar Mitchell who is the Director of Champion of Education at CVCC. Lamar’s visit was to promote “Get Not out of Your Life”, the messaging campaign being launched throughout a 15 county region in western North Carolina. It is only one part of the Future Workforce Alliance (FWA) campaign whose 5-year goal is to increase the educational attainment of our region’s working- age adults.
Lamar began his presentation explaining the job loss trends over the last decade. Lamar explained that jobs created today are requiring greater technical skills. The Future Workforce Alliance (FWA) campaign was created to address this trend. Examples of goals set by this program are 1). Local community colleges will see an increase in enrollments, 2). Individuals will be encouraged to re-engage with education and 3). To create a learner support system that will reduce barriers to education and help students meet the goal of graduating.
Lamar concluded his presentation explaining that individuals interested in expanding their job skills can begin their journey by simply dialing 2-1-1 and telling the agent you want to “Get not out” of your life.
